The course consists of two parts: (1) translation and revision of specialised texts; (2) summarizing translation.
The first part is an introduction into translation of specialized texts from Spanish into Dutch. Focal points of this course are: localizing, evaluating and using sources efficiently, assessment of quality of the source text and quality requirements in the target language, revision criteria and procedures, evaluation of the translation process. The course is centered on a number of very specific translation tasks of limited extension about various topics. These tasks presents various translation problems, ranging from discrepancies between source culture and target culture, terminology and register issues, need for documentation search, justification of translation strategies etc.
In the second part of the course the student will make summarizing translations into Dutch of Spanish oral and written texts according to a specific brief which stipulates the function, the target audience and the publication medium of the translation. This part aims to foster listening and reading competence in Spanish and writing competence in Dutch. The documentation, translation and revision strategies that will be acquired in the first part can be implemented in this second part of the course.
