3. Course contents *

This course deals with the properties of electricity and magnetism in a classical i.e. non quantum mechanical way, though, where possible the link with quantum mechanics is made. A large part of the course is devoted to the properties of light. Some topics of so-called Modern Physics are also addressed like the special theory of relativity, quantum mechanics and radioactivity. The theory is illustrated with examples and classroom experiments.

The following topics are discussed :

Electrostatics : Coulomb and Gauss' law, calculation of electric fields and electrostatic potentials for different (continuous) charge distributions, Ohm's law, Kirchhoff's laws, network analysis, alternating currents, ... 

Magnetostatics : magnetic field due to a point charge, Biot-Savart's law, Ampere's law, Faraday's law and induction, ...

Maxwell equations, Electromagnetic waves

Optics : lenses and mirrors

Interference, diffraction and polarization of light

Special Relativity : Lorentz transformation, the concept of simultaneity, equivalence of mass and energy,

Radioactivity : radioactive decay, nuclear reactions, chain reactions, nuclear power plants, nuclear fission and fusion

Introduction to Quantum Mechanics : wave-particle duality, the principle of a LASER, the principle of electron microscopy.
