3. Course contents *

This course surveys some major themes and issues in cultural sociology and aims to familiarize students with the most important approaches in cultural theory and media theory. The course is divided in five parts. A first part provides an overview of different traditions or approaches in cultural sociology (hermeneutics, cultural studies, critical theory, historical-sociological approach). The second part deals with the different dimensions of culture (e.g. language, cultural practices, rituals, cultural cognition and values). The third part discusses cultural analyses of media (e.g. television, digital culture) and the fourth part treats issues such as high vs low culture. The course ends with a long discussion of processes of cultural change.
