This course offers a systematic survey of German literary history from 1600 to 1890 and treats the following periods: 'Barock', 'Aufklärung', 'Sturm und Drang', 'Klassik', 'Romantik', 'Dichter zwischen Klassik und Romantik', 'Biedermeier/Vormärz und Junges Deutschland' and '(Poetischer) Realismus'. This survey will critically discuss the forms and functions, possiblities and limitations of literary historiography. Besides studying the main literary periods of German literary history and its primary representatives, the attention is focused on the social, religious, philosophical, and scientific context that shaped German literary history.
