3. Course contents *

The course mainly deals with the history of French and deals with the following two questions:

1) How did French develop from Vulgar Latin? This part concerns the external history of French and gives an overview of the external history and observes how historical, geographical and socio-cultural factors have influenced the development and spread of French.

2) What is Medieval French? This part deals with the internal history of French.i I concerns reading and translation of French medieval texts and deals with some morphological and syntactic aspects of the internal history of French. The most important evolutions are listed. Furthermore, students are familiarized with the dictionaries necessary for studying the evolution of French.

Finally, a brief introduction is given to the phonetic transcription and the main features of the French vowels and consonants .
