3. Course contents *

The following eras are studied:

Part 1: Middle Ages. This part aims at a thorough introduction to medieval Dutch literature (until about 1450) and its scientific study. It also offers a first introduction to Middle Dutch (promotion of reading and translation skills) and medieval writing (textualis). The primary literature includes some complete editions (eg Van den vos Reynaerde, Beatrijs and Lanseloet van Denemerken), but also fragments of well-known and less well-known texts. Part of this primary literature is offered in modern translation, part in the original language. The secondary literature consists of several chapters from literary histories and introduction or commentary in editions. To promote the reading skills of Middle Dutch, a recent handbook with exercises is used.
