Gottfried Benn - Works from Expressionism to the Postwar Period

This course will take students to a deep dive into Gottfried Benn's (1886-1956) poetry, essays and prose, ranging from his Expressionist beginnings (Morgue) to the post-war Statische Gedichte, the Roman des Phänotyp and the late 'parlando poems'. The seminar will trace the poetological development of his work, as well as the literary import from contemporary anthropology and the sciences, and discuss biographical, poetological and political dimensions of his disturbing decision to curry favour, practically and intellectually, with the National Socialist Regime in 1933/34. Using recent "genetic" scholarly editions of his poetry, we will - for some poems - delve into the author's writing process, his écriture, and study his manuscripts, notebooks and typescripts.
