3. Course contents *

The present course will deepen your understanding of nineteenth-century literature in English and (re-)acquaint you with some of its key figures. It touches upon the most important literary developments of the period including romanticism, realism, naturalism and regionalism. Taking diversity as a guiding principle, the literary materials we study cover a wide range of genres (detective, horror, problem play, ode, elegy, slave narrative etc.) and offer fruitful ground for discussions about class, gender, race and sexuality. The course consists of a series of interactive lectures and a writing assignment designed to teach you how to make an academic argument about a literary text.
