The foundations of contemporary theater studies were layed when theory emancipated itself from literary analysis. This paradigmatic emancipation encompassed a significant broadening of the object at stake here: from text to staging to performance, from performing arts to theatrical happening to the theatricality of the everyday. In this course, we will analyze how theater studies uses insights and methodological tools from semiotics, ideology criticism, phenomenoloy, media theory, feminism, psychoanalysis, sociology and anthropology. These changing alliances will be studied in relation to shifts within historical and contemporary performing arts.
