This course (and all the following English Proficiency Courses) specifically contributes to improving language awareness and language skills in English and aims to help students to effectively and fluently contribute to discussions within and outside their own field of study while making use of abstract notions and expressions. At the end of all Proficiency Courses students are able to understand at a reasonable speed and with a critical mind general and academically specific texts and are able to prepare and conceptualise texts within their domain of study as well as outside, make notes or write an essay which bears witness to good communication skills. In doing so students will activate communicative strategies based on language awareness and will use primary sources. The level which is aimed at (end of Bachelor's programme) is ALTE 4 or CEFR C1.

At the start of this course, the students should have:
- Attained European level B2+/C1 in all four skills, namely writing, speaking, listening, reading.
- Have followed and passed the corresponding English proficiency courses in the first year.
- Accurate and fluent everyday, functional English.
