An introduction to the French literature of the XIXth and XX / XXIth centuries, starting with pre / romanticism, then the Belgian symbolism on the banks of the Schelde.

French symbolism stranded with the Great War and modernism entered, intertwined with realism and naturalism. "La fin du siècle" brings decadentism (Guy de Maupassant will be but one example).

Realism, naturalism, modernism are introduced through the canonical figures. Proust and his contemporaries are presented.

The interaction between the historical and cultural context on the one hand and the important literary movements on the other is studied for each period. The guiding principle in this regard is the way in which the writer repeatedly profiles himself in the changing social context.
