The course provides a general introduction to the historical, social, cultural and political structures of Spain. A particular attention is given to inter-ethnic relations and processes of nation building. The common thread throughout the course is the interaction between religion, ethnicity and nation. The course looks at how these historical processes shed light on current events. The course covers chronologically the main historical stages focusing on a few key moments: Al Andalus and the Reconquista; 1492; Spanish Golden Age and the Black Legend; The rupture between the "two Spains"; the Spanish Civil War and the Franco regime; the restoration of democracy; the Spain of the Autonomous Regions and Spanish language policy.
