3. Course contents *

The course provides a general introduction to the historical, social, cultural and political structures of Spain. A particular attention is given to the inter-ethnic relations and process of nation building. The common thread throughout the course is the interaction between religion, ethnicity and nation. During the course we look at how these historical processes shed light on current events. The course covers chronologically the main historical stages focusing on a few key moments: Al Andalus and the Reconquista; 1492; the Spanish Golden Age and the Black Legend; The rupture between the "two Spains"; the Spanish Civil War and the Franco regime; the restoration of democracy; the Autonomous Regions and language policy in contemporary Spain.
