Computer learner corpora are electronic collections of (near-) natural foreign or second language learner texts assembled according to explicit design criteria. Learner corpora are mushrooming all over the world and many linguistic studies currently use learner corpus data to investigate learner language. Such studies have been influential in the fields of language teaching, language assessment and dictionary making, to name but a few. This course aims to introduce students to learner corpus research methods and the findings which this field have yielded so far. It will be shown that learner corpus research is a powerful heuristic which helps to better understand how learners acquire a foreign/second language. Focus will mainly be on learners of English as a foreign language.
