specific prerequisites for this course

an active knowledge of

- Dutch

- English

- general knowledge of the use of a PC and the Internet

specific prerequisites for this course

Knowledge and notice of typical topics and concepts from Materials Sciences such as normal and shear stress, force, loading, elasticity; and their relations eg. the Mohr Stress Diagram.

- The student can define and describe the common concepts, features, technology and the usual basic assumptions of the material ground and soil, The student masters a subject-specific vocabulary. For example, the student can define the main features, terminology and concepts related to such as the composition and mechanical parameters of sand, clay and other soil types, ... He / she can describe specific laboratory and field tests. He / she can distinguish concepts such as anisotropy,non-elastic behavior. (BE1, BK-K1)
- The student can identify the common values, explain the (derived) relations and demonstrate in the form of a (mathematical) conclusive evidence. For example, the student controlls aspects as water content, pore content, permeability factor, the parameters of the mechanical behavior of the material 'soil', identify and interpret it. He / she can formulate a conclusive evidence for the relationship between pore content and unit weight, between gradient and effective soil stress, he / she can derive expressions for sliding equilibrium of a retaining wall. (BE4, BK-K2, BK-K3)
- The student can explain and illustrate the presented calculation methods , with interpretation of all the formulas to apply common concepts and parameters. He / she can for simple numerical problems, analogous to examples, justify a a method of calculation with sound arguments and illustrate his / her understanding. The student uses the necessary (mathematical) explanations, demonstrating that he / she understands the backgrounds. Example: the student can explain the design methods and principles for shallow foundations and foundations on piles, with interpretation of all the formulas to apply common concepts and parameters. He / she takes a (partial) problem with the appropriate solution method, justify the reasons for the choices made and works with the appropriate numerical values into the required solution level. (BE2, BK-K3)
- The student can analyze questions that lean towards the practice, in terms of the guidance provided in the lectures principles, concepts, variables, formulas, ... (BE3, BR1, BR3, BK-K1, BK-K5)
- The student is able to use data bases and other references in ordr to analyze, qualify and evaluate geotechnical properties of the soil. (BR1)
