3. Course contents *

This is an elective course solely for students of English in their second or third year of the Bachelor’s program. It is being taught only in academic years starting with an uneven number (2019-2020, 2021-2022, etc.).

The purpose of this Poetry Lab is not to offer a historical survey of canonical poetry in English, which would be impossible in a course of 3 ECTS, but to offer the opportunity to explore a wide variety of poems (mostly recent and contemporary), to engage in close reading, to learn to reflect on poems in writing and speech, and to invite attempts at writing poetry yourself (if you are so inclined). The course is set up so as to contribute to a number of larger didactic aims defined by the University of Antwerp: besides wishing to stimulate creativity among students, it pays particular thematic attention to questions of environmental sustainability, globalization, and (urban) diversity. In this course, you will be reading poems from around the world, by people of very different backgrounds, and on topics that should be able to speak to you today.

There will be no final exam or paper: you will obtain all the various components of your final grade in the course of the semester (for details, see below).
