3. Course contents *

  • The topic of the course is "Le conditionnel en français". It contains the following components:
  • The different morphological forms of the conditionnel with their names.
  • Overview of the three large groups using the French conditionnel with their subdivisions.
  • Critical discussion of classifications of the use of the conditionnel that can be found in grammars and in specialized literature.
  • Brief historical overview of the historical morphological development of this verb form.
  • Presentation of some stages and arguments in the debate about whether the conditionnel is a mode or a time.
  • Detailed description of the three major "emplois canoniques" of the conditionnel with the linguistic problems that each of these uses poses and the hypotheses that are proposed for the semantic description of those uses.
  • Presentation of some hypotheses about the deeper, "invariant" meaning of the conditionnel.
  • Reading of one or two journal articles about this verb form.
