3. Course contents *

This section offers a thorough introduction to medieval Dutch literature (up to approx. 1450) and its scientific study. It also offers a first introduction to Middle Dutch (reading and translation skills) and the reading of medieval manuscripts (textualis). The primary literature includes some complete canon texts (eg Van den vos ReynaerdeBeatrijs and Lanseloet van Denemerken), but also fragments of well-known and lesser-known texts. Part of this primary literature is presented in modern translation, part in the original language. The secondary literature consists of a number of scientific articles and an introduction or commentary in editions, but also parts of the MOOC Middelnederlands (knowledge clips about Middle Dutch literature). To promote the reading skills of Middle Dutch, a recent manual with exercises is used.
