3. Course contents *

This course unit deals with the production and application of building materials (from glass to asphalt), from the extraction of raw materials to the recycling. 

  1. Durability and mechanics of asphalt are discussed in depth, starting from the extraction, the choice of materials and the asphalt mix design to the production and laying of asphalt. For the mix design, the PRADOWIN software is used. Afterwards you can use this software to design an asphalt mixture depending on an application design, e.g. for the course unit "testing of building materials", where the asphalt mixture is created and tested in the laboratory, in accordance with the relevant standards. During the lectures, there is a particular focus on new materials and the best available technologies (BAT) in asphalt, recycling opportunities and the right slection of a suitable mixture for specific applications. Bitumen type and agggregates are an important component and a general theme throughout the whole asphalt process. 
  2. The lectures will also provide an overview of other building materials: brick and stone, steel and wood, glass. The most important material characteristics will be defined and the influence of environmental aspects on building materials is commented. The production process and properties of different building materials are explained. The application of these materials in construction projects is discussed: which properties are decisive for material selection, which conditions are important, what are the advantages and disadvantages of the building materials, etc?
