3. Course contents *

This course analyses the varied forms of the reception of historical English literature in 20th and 21st century literary and cinematic works, highlighting the enduring influence and relevance of historical literature. For example, translations of medieval literature are sometimes major literary events in their own right (e.g. Seamus Heaney’s award-winning translation of Beowulf). Through case studies, the course focuses on three central ways in which medieval English literature continues to shape contemporary English literature:

  1. Translations
  2. Retellings in literature and film
  3. Blending different historical sources into new narratives
