You learn Mandarin Chinese, the official language of the People's Republic of China. After introducing the different languages within the Sinitic language family, we treat phonetics and phonology, transliteration systems (with focus on Hanyu Pinyin) and the writing system (active knowledge of about 300 characters and their possible combinations, with insight in etymography). We consider the role of syntax and writing system in the percetion of the Chinese language and culture. We see the basic principles of Chinese syntax on A1-level and illustrate the analytic character of the language, as we introduce the first particles.
