The course consists of two parts. In Part 1 (lecturer: Prof. H. Meeus), the students are acquainted with a theoretical framework and several practical skills that are important in the development of academic skills. The focus in this part will be on three elements: (1) general features related to designing and executing scientific research, (2) sources and critical source analysis and (3) the library. In Part 2 (lecturers from the Department of Applied Linguistics, Translation and Interpreting), the students will focus on details related to research and research methodology in their own fields of expertise (Applied Linguistics, Translation Studies, Interpreting Studies). The focus in this part will be on features such as research concepts, referencing and citation, product research and process research, surveys, general text structure. In addition, students are introduced to the research carried out by some of the lecturers at the Department of Applied Linguistics, Translation and Interpreting.
