3. Course contents *

The course examines literary representations of different kinds of outsidership (social, sexual, ethnic, romantic, existential,...) in English and American literature. This year's readings include Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, Kate Chopin's The Awakening, Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things, Toni Morrison's Beloved, and Tommy Orange's There There.
