3. Course contents *

The course consists of two parts: (1) a theoretical part and (2) a practical part. In the theoretical part, the basic principles of present-day English grammar are explained with detailed descriptions and explanations of essential target features related to verbs (e.g., the conjugations of verbs, the uses of the English tenses, of modal verbs, subjunctives, conditionals). In the practical part (exercise sessions), the theoretical knowledge is put into practice by means of (contextualised) grammatical exercises and selected discussions of these exercises. In both the theoretical part and the practical part, typical problems (of interference) for (Dutch-speaking) language learners of English are discussed. Because of time constraints in the lectures, you are regularly expected to prepare items for discussion before attending the lectures.

The theoretical and practical parts of this course are dealt with in lectures, in which target features/grammatical phenomena of present-day English are explained, using MS PowerPoint presentations. In addition, extensive (online) exercise sessions are planned, where a selection of items from the theory classes are extensively practised and discussed.
