At the start of this course the student should have acquired the following competences:

an active knowledge of

- Dutch

- Student should be able to define concepts like phonons, Fermi gas, ... and give the necessary mathematical expressions.
- Student should be able to apply these concepts in solving simple problems.
- Students should be able to make the link between the experimental results and the mathematical description.
- Students should always have a critical attitude towards the obtained results and the used mathematical/physical models. Students know the limitations of the models.
- Students know how to use a handbook to study solid state physics.

This course is a continuation of part 1. Some topics will be discussed in more detail and some new topic will be introduced.

The following topics are discussed :

- Elasticity theory
- Quantummechanical description of phonons
- Impurities in semiconductors

New topics include

- Plasmons, polaritons
- Magnetism

The course has an international dimension.
