The basic concepts of computer networks will be explained. In the introduction, the issues will be split in different communication layers, each with their respective responsibilities. Followed by:
- The network layer: adressing and routering mechanisms + interaction with the data link layer.
Data link layer: deals with the functioning of ethernet for local delivery.
- The transport layer: the functioning, differences and similarities between TCP and UDP.
The students needs to be able to install an operating system of Windows, share resources and set rights and permissions. They need to be able to configure an IP-based network without servers and they need to solve problems. They need to be able to set up an Internet connection with a simple ISP router, to understand routing tables and to adjust port forwarding. Tools like sniffers, virtualization, scripting, backup, firewalls, imaging are part of the learning domain.
Labo Windows server:
In the lab students will set up a server network based on a fictitious company. We make use of the most popular operating systems.
