3. Course contents *

The theoretical part of the course builds on 4-Organic Chemistry, and consists of two parts: organic reactions, and an introduction to structure determination. The organic reactions part consists of 8 chapters: substitution and elimination reactions, reactions of alcohols, ethers, amines and thiols, reactions of organometallics and radicals, reactions of carbonyl compounds and reactions on benzene. Introduction to structure determination treats IR and NMR spectroscopies, and mass spectrometry.

Starting from general apparatuses and methods in the organic lab, the link between structure and reactivity is studied by the synthesis, purification and characterization of a series of aromatic methyl esters. The corresponding hydrolysis constants are determined. Molecular models are used as a way of clarifying. The resolution of a racemate is effected.

In the second part of the practicum, nucleophilic substitutions and eliminations are studied. The industrial additive ethyl-t-butylether is synthesized. Characterisation and composition are determined with IR.
