In this course, the foundation for the entire programme is laid. Firstly, the students are made familiar with a number of basic concepts regarding safety (such as damage, risk, fault, prevention, ...), concepts which are analysed from various disciplines. Attention will also be given to prevention in several disciplines Next, various safety theories are studied, among which the interdisciplinary safety theory of Viaene based on damage theory. The  chemistry component of the course deals with dangerous chemical products and the risks inherent  to the nature and the phase of the products),  such as the risk they entail for humans and the environment. This part of the course pays attention to safety aspects when working with dangerous products, as well as to a number of policy initiatives in order to prevent serious accidents involving dangerous products.
