3. Course contents *

The course consists of 3 major parts:

  1. After a general introduction on metals and their properties, the main focus is put on the mechanical behaviour of metals.  The different strengthening mechanism are explained based on the atomistic behaviour of the material during elastic and plastic deformation.  Specific attention is given on how a number of physical and thermodynamic parameters can be used to predict the properties of the alloys, together with the effect of temperature and the nature of mechanical sollicitation.  Each of the different strengthening mechanism will be clarified by using commercial steel, Ti-, Al- and Cu-alloys as example and the various industrial testing methods will be described in detail.
     
  2. The second part focuses on the surface properties and resulting corrosion behaviour of metals.  After an introduction on electrochemical properties and segregation, the effect of alloying on these properties will be discussed in detail.  Examples of industrial alloys like stainless steel, (anodised) aluminium and Ni-alloys for high temperature applications will be given.
     
  3. The final part concerns the recycling of metals, both by hydrometallurgy as well as pyrometallurgy. Different flowsheets in extractive metallurgy will be studied in detail, together with the economic and ecologic impact of the different processes.  Some of the leading recycling flow sheets will discussed.
