3. Course contents *

In this course, the electronic structure of atoms and molecules is being treated. The derivation is mainly based on the concepts of rotation-invariance and the succesive reduction in symmetry due to the different Hamiltonian terms. Are being treated: the hydrogen atom, central-field potential, rotation-invariance and momentum, Clebsch-Gordon-coefficients, Wigner-Eckart-theorem, commutators and their physical meaning, degeneracy and symmetry; atoms with several electrons: central-field approximation, orbitals, spin, Pauli-principle, Slater-determinants, correlation and exchange, LS- and jj-coupling, spin-orbit interaction, Zeeman-effect, Stark-effect, hyperfine interactions; interaction of atoms with an electromagnetic field; molecular structure: Born-Oppenheimer-approximation, molecular orbitals.
