3. Course contents *

This course consists of 5 chapters. In chapter 1, material balances for chemical reactors (batch reactor, plug flow reactor and continuous stirred tank reactor) are constructed. In chapter 2, it is explained how the optimal reactor volume and residence time can be calculated for these 3 reactors, and for reactors in series. In chapter 3, multiple reactions (in parallel or in series) will be treated. In chapter 4, the energy balance of reactors will be described, as well as temperature effects. Finally, in chapter 5, non-ideal reactors are briefly discussed (calculation of residence time and conversion of reactants).

Besides the theoretical basis, a lot of time will be spent to applying the theory, by solving scientific problems (exercises). The exercises in the course are mostly solved during the lectures. At the end of each chapter, there are also a number of exercises which the students make at home, and which are collected in some kind of potfolio-system.

Finally, a visit to the chemical company Lanxess Antwerpen is planned, where the students see practical applications of the theory, such as optimization of reactors.

This course contributes to realizing the following general aims of the Master education Chemistry: M1, M2, M4, M5, M6, M7, M11, M1O&B.
