3. Course contents *

A detailed review on the different interactions of particles with matter will be discussed, and a progressive approach on how such interactions can be used for the detection of particles is adopted. A fair number of examples of existing experiments is used to explain the details and subtleties of these detectors. Such detectors are used at particle accelerators, in astrophysics and for the studies of cosmic

rays, and in medical physics. In particular the complicated and very challenging detectors at the new accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider, are discussed in detail, both from the basic detector point of view but also how to collect the data and the corresponding computing challenges for the analysis if the data.
