3. Course contents *

The course is an introduction to phylogenetics, a branch of biology that aims to reveal the historical relationships among organisms and to depict these relationships in a tree consisting of a series of sequantial bifurcations. The course covers the history of biological systematics and taxonomy and discusses different lines of thought and methodologies developed in this respect. A series of case studies on the evolutionary history of plants and vertebrate animals further illustrate the principles, methodologies and difficulties of phylogenetic systematics.
