The course consists of two partims:
Partim I ('Catalysis' by P. Cool, V. Meynen)
General theoretical aspects of catalysed chemical processes; relevant definitions on activity, selectivity, stability will be discussed in order to choose the most efficient catalysts for different chemical processes; thermodynamical and kinetical aspects coupled to the reaction mechanism, general catalytic properties of heterogeneous catalysed reactions (type and role of catalytic active element, and the support material). The main focus is on heterogeneous catalysis, but also homogeneous and biocatalysis will be briefly discussed.
Partim II ('Industrial catalysis and process safety', by P. Buskens and G. Vercruysse, BASF)
Aim of this partim is to gain insight into the application of catalysis in industrial processes. Starting from the basics of the previous partim, the practical application of catalysis in industry is now discussed. Main aspects are the role, function and embedding of the catalyst in the overall production process together with the energetical aspects of the production process. Emphasis will also be on sustainable development in chemical industry. In the part on process safety (G. Vercruysse) the following aspects are being discussed: PFD (Process Flow Diagram), typical design aspects for catalytic reactors, important Process Safety Management systems, risk-analysis HAZOP, Management of Change MOC, mechanical and instrumental security and safety regulations….
During the semester a site visit to the BASF plant in the Antwerp harbour is planned.
