At the start of this course the student should have acquired the following competences:

Theoretical physics. Elements of quantum mechanics and statistical physics.

- Basic knowledge of some fabrication techniques of low dimensional systems.
- Insight in the electronic properties of two, one and zero dimensional semiconductor nanostructures in comparison with three dimensional systems and with or without the application of magnetic fields.
- Understand different transport mechanisms in two dimensional systems and their implications to measurable quantities.
- Understand how confined light can be treated in a similar way.

Introduction into the basics of two, one and zero dimensional semiconductor nanostructures.

The importance of such systems for modern physics and present day technology (e.g. micro-electronics and opto-electronics) will be explained.

The following subjects will be discussed:

- Growth and lithography of low dimensional systems

- Two dimensional systems

- Quantum wires and quantum dots

- Ballistic transport

- Diffusion theory

- Tunneling

- Quantum dots

- Quantum Hall effect and the fractional quantum Hall effect

- Theory of carrier transport in semiconductors

- Mesoscopic physics of light

The course has an international dimension.
