3. Course contents *

In this course the fundamental aspects of ligand field theory, as part of the molecular orbital theory, are discussed in order to understand the structure and properties of transition metal complexes. After a short introduction which repeats a number of concepts of group theory, the crystal and ligand field theories are discussed and the mathematical procedures to calculate the energy states of transition metal complexes in order to predict and explain the electronic spectra of these compounds, are investigated intuitively. At the end of the course an introduction is given on empirical organometallic chemistry, in particular the properties of transition metal complexes containing one or more M-C bonds.
