3. Course contents *

Before discussing some applications of electrochemical (bio) sensors, theoretical concepts of electrochemistry will be explained.
In a second part, the Butler-Volmer equation, valid for electrode reactions, will be discussed illustrating the relationship between the electric current and the electrode potential. Some limiting cases are discussed. All forms of polarization and (non) steady state voltammetry will be explained in a third part. In a laboratory session, different types of voltammograms will be recorded illustrating the concepts. The influence of experimental parameters on the nature of the voltammograms will be illustrated in a modelling session. Before the laboratory session, a demonstration will take place in the AXES lab.
