3. Course contents *

Human behaviour is analysed as a biological phenomenon. Phylogenetic evolution serves as a guideline. The present-day human behaviour is looked at as the result of Darwinian natural selection. Next to the ethological approach some common interests with the fast growing Evolutionary Psychology and some social sciences are dealt with. The theoretical discussion is illustrated with examples from individual as well as social human behaviour.
These topics are dealt with: history and misunderstandings of the modern approach of the study of human behaviour; adaptations for combating hostile forces of nature; women's and men's sexual fitness increasing strategies for the long- and short-term; adaptations in parental behaviour and in behaviour towards other kin; cooperative alliances; aggression and warfare; status, prestige and social dominance; territoriality; nonverbal behaviour and the evolution of language.
