3. Course contents *

The course starts with an overview of the ecological background and societal context of restoration ecology. Then problems and possibilities for restioration of some ecosystem types are discussed: Mires, bogs & fens, , Heathlands and nutrient-poor grasslands, Grasslands, Forest, Coastal habitats, Inland surface waters. Next more general topics are present: Restoration of soil functions, Restoring resilience, Spontaneous succession as a restoration tool, Ecological Restoration in the EU Biodiversity Strategy

 The different aspects of restoration are presented during 4 excursion days in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands where different projects are visited.
