Materials degradation in process industries
Process industries are employed to make a wide variety of food stuffs, pharmaceuticals, fertilisers and a wide variety of modern day commodities for everyday use. One of the critical aspects in such process industries, is the safety of the operation. Apart from operating conditions, construction materials play a vital role in safety of any plant. It has to be fit for purpose, economical safe, easy to maintain and retain its integrity during the lifetime of the plant. Unfortunately the second law of thermodynamics predict that all materials degrade with time, and it is just a matter of how fast this happens whether a material would be suitable for a specific application and/or process.
This course will consider the different types of degradation that equipment could typically suffer in process industries, the thermodynamic basis of such degradation processes, the kinetics of degradation and what could affect it, prevention strategies to limit such degradation taking place and what role materials microstructures play in the process.
