3. Course contents *

This course will explore Austrian literature from 1900 until the present. Selected texts (by Schnitzler, Horvath, Qualtinger, Handke, Bernhard, Jelinek, Arno Geiger, Aichinger, Jandl, h.c. artmann, Schindel, Rabinovici and others) will be discussed in terms of their literary characteristics as well as in terms of the specific context of Austrian history and society.

We will thereby focus on the following four aspects of Austrian literature:
a) The foundations of the Wiener Moderne
b) The Austrian theater tradition of scandal and provocation (from Schnitzler to Jelinek)
c) Socio-politically engaged authors from the fifties until the present
d) Contemporary Austrian-Jewish authors
