3. Course contents *

This course evaluates in how mechanics determine morphology and biological performance of animals and humans.  Therefore mechanical principles are applied to the muscul-skeletal system.  For that purpose, complex morphology is reduced to simple mathematical models.

  • Kinematical analysis: history, film and videao techniques, transducer technology, derived variables, smoothing...
  • Basic mechanics in a biological context: forces, moments, moments of inertia, impulse, momentum, energy fluctuations, work, power...
  • Statical and dynamical equilibrium: boundary conditions and applications, inverse dynamics...-Material properties in a biological context: linear and non-linear elaticity, tension and compression, shear loading, bending, viscoelasticity, importance of elastic materials in biology....
  • Material properties: bone, cartilage...
  • Mechanics of the muscle-tendon-complex: length-tension relationship, force-velocity relationship, muscle work and power, tension adaptations, morphological correlates, dynamics of the muscle-tenson complex
