3. Course contents *

In this course a number of applications and (industrial) production processes of polymer materials will be discussed.  The course consists of general and specialized lectures, in addition to a company visit.  The general lectures contain some essential topics from polymer physics and polymer processing and serve as a background for the specialized lectures.

Part I: Properties and characterization of polymers

Phases and phase transitions of polymers in the solid state

Techniques for thermal analysis of polymers

Mechanical properties of polymers

Physical properties of polymers (transport, surface, electrical, optical) - Industrial polymers and additives

Processing techniques and recycling of polymers

Part II: Applications of polymer materials

Multicomponent polymer materials such as polymer blends, block and graft copolymers, interpenetrating polymer networks

Functional polymers: polymers for nanotechnology, intelligent polymers, conductive polymers, polymer membranes, etc.

Bio-related applications of polymers: biomaterials, filtration, polymers for dental applications, drug delivery, ...

Synthesis and characterization of polymers for bio-related applications

Production techniques for polymer materials: solvent casting, photo-polymerization, electrospinning, ...

Combination of polymer materials with other material classes (metals, ...)

The specialized lectures will be given by a number of guest lecturers and include a number of applications ranging from biobased polymers, membrane applications based on polymer technologies adhesives applications in industrial setup.
