3. Course contents *

This course offers an overview and a comparison of a few modern grammar theories (including Minimalism, Functional Grammar, Systemic Grammar, Role and Reference Grammar, Cognitive Grammar). Participants receive an introduction into the organization and the operational principles of the models (the role of the lexicon, the structure of lexical elements, word order, the treatment of grammatical functions, etc.) in view of their basic philosophy (the opposition between formalism and functionalism, the concern with cognition, with typology, etc.). By way of illustration, we then have a look at how the models handle one or a few linguistic phenomena (e.g. passives, cleft, causatives, deviant case marking, etc.).
