3. Course contents *

After an introductory lecture on the historical novel, we will read and discuss a very recent "classical" historical novel, Manhattan Beach (2017), and two breakthrough "new" historical novels in the United States after 1950, Slaughterhouse Five (1969) by Kurt Vonnegut, and Ragtime (1975) by E.L. Doctorow. The second half of the course will be a research project on the subject of V. (1963), the first novel by Thomas Pynchon. Students will investigate whether this special historical novel is as misogynistic as a number of critics claim it is.
