3. Course contents *

After introductory classes on the historical novel, we will read and discuss a very recent "classical" historical novel, Manhattan Beach (2017), and two breakthrough "new" historical novels in the United States after 1950, Slaughterhouse Five (1969) by Kurt Vonnegut, and Ragtime (1975) by E.L. Doctorow. The second half of the course will deal with recent historical novels by an African American author and enable students to reflect and write on the narrativization of America's checkered past.
