What kind of gender patterns do we detect in online discourse? That is one of the central questions for the present course.  We explore older and recent findings on language and gender and link them to the relevant research on (informal) computer-mediated communication (CMC) and its specific features. Apart from that, we discuss patterns of age grading (focusing on adolescence) and the impact of social networks.  Identity construction is also a prominent theme.  In the end we apply the insights gained from the literature on CMC (media: Facebook, WhatsApp…).  The case study follows from the literature that is discussed in the course, but the students decide on the specific design of their case study.
