3. Course contents *

After an introductory section on social evolution and the significant impact of recent developments in white biotechnology (fermentation processes, enzymatic processes, renewable raw materials, biorefineries) the different steps in the development and application of industrial biotechnological processes are discussed. In the development of the process, the applied biocatalysts, the type of process, the screening procedures, the construction of stock cultures, the fermentation product, and the fermentation medium are important.
The industrial biotechnological process itself involves several steps, such as upstream processing, the bioreaction and the downstream processing.

Current and innovative industrial biotechnology processes are worked out on the basis of case studies and presented by the students. An industrial biotechnology company will be visited.
