3. Course contents *

The course first defines typology as one type of study of the unity and variety in the world's languages. We then take a tour of the world's languages and see how they form famlies and other kinds of groups. Most of the course focusses on those aspects of  the grammar on which typology can boast achievements, viz. the study of word order, grammatical relations, tense, aspect and modality, negation, and the relation between language and cognition. Students also learn how to do fieldwork.
