The relationship between language and sex can be looked at from at least two point of views:

(1) sex-specific language behaviour: how does biological sex relate to situational, institutional and cultural factors? (2) biological sex (German: 'Sexus') and language structure: whether and to what extent does the structure of the German language (especially the linguistic category of gender) reflect biological sex differences?First, students will get acquainted with a number of issues pertaining to recent feminist language criticism in the German speaking countries (reading of relevant articles and chapters in the book 'Einführung in die feministische Sprachwissenschaft' (Ingrid Samel, 2000). Second, the complex relationship between sex as a biological category and gender as a linguistic one will be explored, with special attention to a number of typological studies which may throw a different light on this difficult issue.
